Merchants are allowed to ask for identification and they can decline to serve you if you don't want to show them.. Sorry, that's how it is. You might feel like you can't show your ID for some reason, and you might be right, but unless you have something legally that says you don't have to then you're out of luck.

Consider doing your shopping online where an ID isn't needed. Wal-Mart even has a website.

if keeping your identity secret is a neccessity then you shouldnt be attracting undue attention to yourself by returning items.
thieves steal, and thentry to return stolen items for cash, or other merchandise. you are creating suspicion by even attempting the act.
second, no store even has to accept a return or an item for exchange if you dont have a reciept. the reciept is proof that the item came from their store. no reciept, no proof. no proof, no requirement to satisfy your problem.

so wal mart is doing you a favor by even taking that return in the first place, id or not.

so the problem is you. not walmart.
you have an unnatural expectation to keep your identity secret. rivaling illegal immigrants, or wanted criminals.
the law is designed to protect honest citizens with nothing to hide.
you obviously have something to hide.

you don't nbeed to show ID
and they don't need to return stolen merchandise

apparently you missed my point,
let me spell it out to you:

If you try to return it without a receipt or ID they assume you stole it.
Does that make more sense to you?
Read the answers clearly

They are not required to return merchandise except witjhin their written policy posted in the store

understand my point?

If you MUST keep your identification private, then stop going out. The witness protection program is a bi***.

..."they" can set Store policy when you don't have your receipt... It's NOT in violation of anything... KEEP YOUR RECEIPT ! (It's like the Pawn Laws... when you bring an item into a Pawn Store, "they" can require you to produce an ID to Pawn your item.)

Keep your receipt.

Also, don't shop at Wal-Mart. They have low prices because of their exploitative business practices.
